Camry is a four door mid-sized family cedan. It is one of the largest selling sedans in America and the largest selling Toyota. The car was first introduced in 1980 in Japan as Toyota Celica Camry. LAter in 1983 Camry was introduced as a compact car. It was launched in US in 1997 as a four door sedan and has been on top of the sales charts nine out of ten times in the past ten years. It is also sold in europe, japan, Australia, asia, etc and it has done well except in Europe and Japan. It was discontinued in Europe in 2004. Camry targets the high end mid-sized sedans which includes Chevrolet Malibu, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima, etc. It has many times been the car of the year. Toyota has been revamping Camry every five years namely '87, '92, '97, 2002 and again in 2007. The 2007 Toyota Camry is the 6th generation car. The car has been assembled in Toyota Motor Manufacturing centers in Georgetown, Kentucky; Melbourne, Australia and China. Camry is also being manufactured at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana. The car is equipped with 2.4 L VVT-i I4 engine rated at 158 hp with the trim levels CE, LE, SE, and XLE and another model with 3.5 L VVT-i V6 engine rated at 268 hp with a 6-speed automatic transmission coming with trim levels LE, SE, and XLE. Another model of Toyota Camry called the Camry Hybrid comes with a revolutionary gasoline-electric hybrid engine. The car is based on the a Hybrid Synergy Drive system which mates the 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor running on 105kW battery. The car gives an impressive 35 to 40 mpg. |
