The first generation Surf was launched in 1984 and production continued till 1989. zit was featured as 3 3 door SUV, very much similar to the Hilux pickup, with a fiberglass top covering. The power came from a 2.0L inline 4 as well as a bigger 2.4L engine. This was modified in 1985 with a 2.4 L engine. In 1988, the engine capacity was increased to 3.0L and featured a V6 engine. A 2.4L turbodiesel variant was also available.
The 2nd generation featured a steel body for the rear although it continued to be a modified Hilux. This time the body style was 5 door as compared to the previous generation which featured 3 door body. The new car had a large choice of engines, 2.0L and 2.4L Inline 4 as well as a 3.0 L V6. Also, there was a choice of 2.4L, 2.8L as well as 3.0L turbodiesel engine too.
Introduced in 1995, the new 3rd generation Hilux Surf was finally made independent of the Hilux Pickup. The new car was based on the LandCruiser Prado. The body was a 5 door one with a choice of 2.7L and 3.4 L gasoline as well as 3.0L turbodiesel engines. Later a 3.0L intercooled turbodiesel engine was also launched.
