The Toyota Hilux, also known in many markets as Toyota Tacoma, is a pickup truck from the Toyota lineup. The truck comes in two basic body styles, the 2 door pickup and the 4-door pickup. The Hilux was launched in 1935 and is still in production. It was relaunched in US as Tacoma in 1995 and is still marketed with the same name.
The car is known for its reliability and sturdiness. The vehicle is known to be one of the best known offroad vehicles. It was very popular in countries with rough terrain such as Mexico. The car is known to suffer extreme terrain and still work smoothly with regular maintenance.
The Hilux debuted in 1935 as Type G1 or a small commercial truck with 1.5 ton capacity. It played its role during WWII as a military vehicle. After the war, Toyota launched the pickup version of the truck in 1947. The Hilux was launched in America in 1969 replacing the Stout has the pickup which was introduced in 1964. The truck came with a 1.9L engine generating 85 bhp of power. The transmission was 4 speed manual. In 1972, the 2.0 L SOHC engine was fitted to the Hilux.
In 1975, an entirely new design of the Hilux was introduced. It came with the new 20R SOHC I4 engine giving a power packed 96 bhp and a 5 speed manual gearbox. The new version was more spacious, better lokking and much more luxurious than the previous ones. Other major changes came to the car in 1981, 1984 and then again in 1989.
1995 brought with it the new Tacoma, a cousin of the Hilux. The car looked similar to the Hilux but had a few subtle changes as well as a different frame. Both the cars were sold together. In 2001, the Tacoma was redesigned with a new crew cab option. The cars came fitted with a 16 valve DOHC engine with 2.4L, 2.7L and 24 valve V6 3.4L engine capacities.
