Matrix is a product if JV between Toyota and General Motor Corp. It is a compact hatch. The car is sold in US as well as Japanese markets. The manufacturing of the car is done in Canada. The Matrix has another cousin called the Vibe sold under the Pontiac banner of GM. Although the mechanics of the two cars are alike, subtle superficial changes are made to make them distinct. The Matrix was first manufactured in 2003 and is still in production. The 4 door hatchback belongs to the compact car segment pitched against the likes of Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf. Another cousin of the Matrix, the Toyota Voltz was sold in Japan from 2002 to 2004. It was also a product of the joint venture between the two firms Toyota and GM. The car was similar to the Vibe. The car, although is a station wagon, has a unique styling and is known as the Crossover Utility Vehicle or a sports wagon owing to its similarity with SUV's. The car came with a choice of two engines, 1.8 L 1ZZ-FE I4 and the 1.8 L 2ZZ-GE I4. The former is more fuel efficient and gives a power of around 130 bhp. The latter, derived from the performance car Celica, gives a robust 170 bhp. The car came with an optional 4x4 variant. In the 2007 Matrix, the high performance GE class engine was dropped and so was the all wheel variant. The successor to the Matrix is the Blade, to be launched in 2009. The production of the Matrix will be discontinued thereafter. |
