The Prius is a hybrid 5 door hatchback from Toyota. In fact the car was the first Hybrid car produced for the mass market. The car debuted in 1997 in Japan and in 2001 in the rest of the world. The car has been a success since its launch due to its low emissions, high fuel efficiency and low maintenance. The NHW10 of Prius was launched in 1997 and was marketed till 2001. This car was not the hatch as it is now but a 4 door compact sedan. The car was fitted with a hybrid 1.5L DOHC gasoline engine and a 288V electric motor. This was called the Toyota Hybrid System. The NHW11 was introduced in 2000. It was also the same 4 door sedan. The car had a 1.5L DOHC VVT-i gasoline engine and 273V electric motor. The transmission was 1-speed CVT. Toyota made a huge jump in design of the Prius in 2004 with the new NHW20 model. This car was a 5 door hatchback. The mileage was much better than the previous versions ie the NHW10 and the NHW11. The new Prius was based on the latest Hybrid Synergy Drive technology of Toyota which was an improvement over the Toyota Hybrid System of the previous versions. The power came from a 1.5L DOHC VVT-i gasoline engine and a more powerful 500V electric motor. The latest model of the Prius is to be scheduled to be launched in 2009. Major upgradations would be a more powerful 1.8L gasoline engine and the use of lithium ion batteries. The new Pius would be based on the on the 3rd generation Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. |
