The Toyota RAV4 is a crossover SUV, first introduced in 1994 in Japan and in '96 in US. The full form of the RAV4 is Recreational Activity Vehicle Four-wheel drive. The car paved the way for other compact sports utility vehicles such as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue or the Hyundai Santa Fe. The SUV is front engined with option of front wheel drive or all wheel drive. The first generation RAV4 came with a body style option of 2-door or 4-door SUV. There was also a 2-door convertible option. The engine was a 2.0L Inline 4 engine with a max power of 120bhp. The transmission was 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic. The second generation RAV4 was introduced to the market in 2001. It reduced the power blues of the previous models by fitting a new 2.0L engine which produced 148bhp of power, a significant jump from the previous generation RAV4's. MOreover, the number of trim levels were also reduced. The new model was only available in four-door body style in America, although 2 door version was sold in some european markets. 2004 brought an upgrade to the RAV4 with a much more powerful 2.4L engine. The third and present generation RAV4 is a 4 door compact SUV. There is a choice of 2.0L and 2.4L gasoline engine as well as a 2.2L diesel engine. A 3.5L V6 engine model is also available in American market.
