Tercel

tercel toyota car models

Tercel was a subcompact sedan from Toyota. The production of the car started in 1978. It was launched in America in 1980 and continued till the end of 1999. It was an entry level vehicle, somewhat related to the Corolla. IN fact in many markets, it was sold under the Corolla brand. THe Tersel was available with a variety of body styles such as 2-door coupé, 3-door and 5-door hatchback, 4-door sedan and a 4-door station wagon.

The Tersel was also called Toyota Corolla Tercel, Toyota Corolla II, Toyota Corsa, Toyota Soluna, Toyota Tercel Windy. The car was similar to the Toyota Paseo, Ford Festiva, Mazda 323 and the Mitsubishi Precis. The car was removed from production in 1999 to make way for the Toyota Platz.

The first generation Tercel was introduced in Japan in 1978. It was later introduced in the United States in 1980. It was a unique car from Toyota as being the first front-wheel drive from Toyota lineup. The car was powered by a 1.5 L SOHC 4-cylinder engine rated at 60 bhp. The engine was mated to transmission choices of 4 or 5-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic.

The second generation Tersel was launched in 1983 and sported a complete makeover from the previous models. Changes were made in overall styling, interiors, body style. Moreover, the car was also given a new name 'Tercel' and was differentiated from the Corolla. Body options available in the new model were 3 or 5-door hatch or four-door station wagon. With this model, a 4x4 version was also launched.

Third generation Tersel debuted in 1987. It came in hatch and coupe form. Here, Toyota tried to shed the image of the car as cheap entry level hatch and gave a more luxurious touch to it. The car equipped with a new 1.5L 12 valve I4 engine rated at 78 bhp as well as a new fully-independent suspension.

Fourth gen was introduced in 1991 and continued till 1994. It was now available as either a two-door coupe or four-door sedan. MOre improvements were made to the engine and transmission. Fifth generation Tercel was introduced in 1995. It had a new 5EFE 1.5 L DOHC I4 engine at 93 bhp. At that time it was the the most fuel-efficient four-cylinder car in the U.S.In 1998, the production of Tercel was discontinued to make way for the 2000 Toyota Echo.
